17 Photos To Inspire You To Experience A Wildlife Safari In Sri Lanka

Firstly, if you’re thinking that this post is an excuse for me to share a bunch of animal pictures then you’re 100% right & I’m giving you a virtual gold star right now. I held back on spamming my Instagram page with elephants because I figured people don’t want to see them as much as I do. But, I can’t resist sharing them so instead I have collated them here into a post which will hopefully inspire you to add a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka to your own bucket list. There’s a lot to love about Sri Lanka like the friendly people, fresh food, gorgeous beaches, Buddhist temples and, of course, the Tuk Tuk rides but today we will just focus on the wildlife. If you’re like me and love animals and nature then I am sure you are going to like this, and if you do love it, you can support the blog by sharing or commenting. Or both if you’re feeling a little crazy! Either way, I hope you enjoy it and p.s there are affiliate links included in this post.

17 Photos to Inspire you to Experience a Wildlife Safari in Sri Lanka

Experiencing a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka is a must do for any nature lover but before you book, check out this photo essay and guide.

The Details

Where it is: Udawalawe National Park.

How I got there: I was staying at Talalla Retreat (read about my experience here) and they were able to book me a driver to the park and back as well as a jeep safari tour.

What happens: Once you get your entry ticket to the National Park the driver will simply drive you around on the track and stop when an animal is spotted. There is a guide on board sitting in the back with guests who will point out the animals, let you know where they are and answer any questions. They never drive too close to the animals or chase them (my photos are using a zoom lens which is why they seem close).

Photos: All photos in this post were shot by me using a Sony Alpha a6000 and 55-210mm lens. (To save money you can buy them together in this bundle from Amazon).

Top tips: Book as early as you can because in the morning the animals are more active and you will have a better chance of seeing them. I left the hotel at 4am and was back by about 1pm.

So many animals to see, i imagine it must have been exhilarating right from the early morning! Never knew Sri Lanka has a wild safari like this, now I have more reason to visit other than the train ride views and elephant-bathing views, haha!
