Best Place To Stay In Malta – Seaside Solo Travel In St George’s Bay

UPDATED FEB 2020. After visiting other cities in Malta I was grateful to have chosen the Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay as my home base. It was a relaxing oasis by the Mediterranean Sea that felt like a world away from everything, but in reality, was just a quick shuttle ride away from the capital. Through the facilities, tours, programs that give back to the local community, and location, it was much more than just a place to sleep. I want to share with you some of the things that stood out to me about this hotel and why I think it’s the best place to stay in Malta.

The relaxation

When I travel, I love to spend the daytime out and about seeing as much as possible, then have a comfortable place to wind down afterward.

This is especially important for me as someone who travels with Endometriosis because it helps me to find the balance between go-go-go and slowing down to rest.

There was no shortage of comfort and relaxation at the Corinthia St George’s Bay. One of the real treats, in my opinion, was the popular day spa which had an indoor pool, jacuzzi, and sauna.

The outdoor pool had an epic view and would be the perfect place to relax in summer, soaking up some rays on a beach chair with a (or a few) drinks from the pool bar!

The amazing pools by the sea is one of the reasons this is the best place to stay in Malta

The rooms at Corinthia St George’s Bay

The comfort extended into the rooms as well.

I was welcomed to each new day with a sunrise view from the balcony of my room and ended each day enveloped in cozy blankets, with my head resting on the fluffiest of pillows.

I appreciated the shower products being such high quality because swimming in the sea can be havoc for my hair – first world problem, I know! It was so nice to have some good products to use after my adventures and I think this deserves a special mention.

The seaside location

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know I LOVE being in the water.

It doesn’t matter if I was wrapped in a dry suit snorkeling the Silfra in Iceland, free diving with pods of Dolphins in the warm waters of Hawaii or doing the traditional post-sauna dip in the icy cold sea in Finland – if there is water around, I’m probably going to jump in.

At the Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay, I got to add another body of water to my list – the Mediterranean Sea. The hotel backs right onto the water so you are just a few steps away from a gorgeous, clear swimming spot.

I visited in November and the water was still warm enough for a sunrise swim. It not only came with a stunning sunrise view but it was the best way to start the day, especially since I had the whole place to myself.

Travel tip: You can rent a GoPro for free to help you document your Malta adventures! I’m a total GoPro loyalist & love that they offer this. Here are some pictures I took during my morning swim using my GoPro. If you don’t have one I definitely recommend borrowing one during your stay.

Giving back to the community

Another great feature of the Corinthia St George’s Bay is how much the hotel gives back to the local area through its tours and activities.

I took the Tower to Tower walking tour as soon as I arrived and it was the perfect introduction to my stay in Malta.

For this tour, the hotel partners with the Ramblers Association of Malta – a local organization that aims to protect and preserve the nature and culture in Malta. My tour was led by Sam and we walked leisurely along a coastal path as he told me all about Malta’s interesting history as well as a lot of local insights on living in Malta.

The hotel also offers a range of ‘Meet the Locals’ tours which allow you the chance to visit local villages and take an off the beaten path look at Maltese culture.

It was so refreshing to see such a strong focus on supporting local and giving back. All of these tours are a wonderful way to travel with a difference and experience something off the touristy path.

How to get to and from St George’s Bay in Malta

It’s not all lazing by the pool, sipping on drinks (though it’s the perfect place for it if that’s on your agenda!)

Corinthia at St George’s Bay understands that you are going to want to explore the sights too. They have a free shuttle bus to Valletta to help you do just that.

All you need to do is let the concierge know so they can reserve your seat and you are set.

Once you are in Valletta you can access the ferries to get around or use the local bus from the main terminal. I used the local bus to visit Mdina and it was really convenient and easy to use.

I also took a Jeep day tour to Gozo which was an awesome day out. The tour offered a pick-up and drop off to the hotel which made it all very easy.

The concierge staff are also helpful if you have questions about planning your days out exploring. They helped me a lot with recommendations for places to visit as well as picking the right bus routes to get around.

They even gave me a couple of maps that came in handy while I was out and about.

I mentioned the concierge, but in fact, I should mention that all of the staff I met at the hotel were absolutely wonderful and always made me feel special and welcome.

Overall thoughts

If you are trying to find the best place to stay in Malta, my pick is the Corinthia Hotel at St George’s Bay.

Comfortable rooms, seaside location, a wide range of services and a strong focus on giving back to the local community makes for a hotel that offers more than just a place to sleep.
