1. Baked feta cheese

I tried this at Eleonas Country Village in Crete and it was so good that I had it twice.

When you scoop up some of the oven-warmed feta with olives, capsicum and a tomato sauce, you’ll know why I love it.

Since returning, I have made this at home but it’s never as good as the real deal.

2. Lamb Kleftiko

Or lamb anything really because the lamb is so good that it’s surely one of the must eat foods in Greece.

The Lamb Kleftiko is melt in your mouth lamb wrapped in parchment paper with vegetables and seasonings and slow-cooked to perfection.

If you’re out and about beach hopping, it might be too heavy for a lunch meal, but works well as a nice dinner meal – washed down with a good wine of course.

3. Frappe

Ok, this one isn’t a food but it’s certainly something you have to try while you’re visiting Greece.

The iced coffee culture is strong in Greece and the foamy, creamy frappes are what I like to call PDG – pretty damn good!

If you can’t wait until you visit to try the frappe, I found where you can buy the special coffee powder online here (and have already bought some of my own).

Then you’ll just need to do a quick Google on how to put it all together – here’s one I found.

4. Dolmades – Stuffed grape leaves

I used to love to buy Dolmades from the supermarket deli back in Australia and once I tried them in Greece, I realized that the authentic version is a world apart from what I had tried.

The grape leaves are usually served as a starter and stuffed with different combinations of rice, meat, spices and/or vegetables depending on the secret recipe of whoever is making them.

5. Gyros

You have most likely heard of Gyros, but as with the stuffed grape leaves, you haven’t tried one until you’ve tried one in Greece.

You’ll get your choice of meat served in pita bread with some lettuce, tomato, onion, and even french fries.

Gyros are a great option for a lunch meal while you are out and about beach hopping and go down well with a cold frappe.

6. Spinach or cheese pie

I tried some amazing homemade spinach and cheese pies when I visited this cute B&B and they were just delish.

You can also find them out and about where takeaway style bakery food is sold.

While I think the homemade B&B ones I tried are the best, if you get a chance to try one no matter where you are, then go for it.

7. Souvlaki

You can’t go wrong with some meat on a stick.

Which means you can’t go wrong with souvlaki.

These kebab like meat skewers are a popular dish in Greece, so you will be able to find them easily on their own or served with sides, and they’ll certainly keep your belly happy.

8. Haloumi

Of all the cheeses, this is my absolute favorite and it is certainly one of the must eat foods for Greece.

You’ll order this as a starter and then just splash a little lemon over this salty, grilled cheese and you’ll be in heaven.

9. Crumbed mushrooms

This is another good starter option which I really liked when I was visiting Corfu.

I would get the crumbed mushrooms and Haloumi cheese and snack away before dinner.

And some obvious must eat foods in Greece

Greek Yoghurt – It will be the most creamy and delicious yogurt you will try. Dash a little honey on top and you’re in for a treat.

Greek Salad – Of course you need to try a nice Greek salad, with some of the best Feta cheese there is, and learn some tips to make your home at home.

Tzatziki – Mmm how good is a nice Tzatziki? Naturally, you’re going to want to get some while you’re visiting, either with your Gyros or as a starter dish.
