Waterproof Jacket

When it comes to what to pack for Ireland, this is the number one must-have.

A good waterproof jacket will come in handy because rain is very common in Ireland. I use a Patagonia waterproof jacket and have taken it with me on a lot of trips and hikes.

It’s been a great investment as it has lasted six years so far and is always handy to have with me.

I recommend investing in a good one because the higher quality will last longer and keep you dryer and warmer – you get what you pay for after all.

When it comes to what to pack for Ireland in April, make sure you have a waterproof jacket.

Light Sweater

The thing you need to know about what to pack for Ireland is layers.

It might be cold and raining one minute, then the sun can be shining warm rays on you in the next.

Packing a couple of light sweaters like this are great base layers, and keeping them light means you’ll be able to put your jackets on over the top when it gets cold.

Medium Jacket

For my medium jacket – the middle layer, I use a Patagonia zip-up jacket.

It’s a good, cozy layer to add extra warmth and has a nice athleisure look to it. If it’s raining or windy I can pop my waterproof jacket on over the top and, if not, I can wear it as is over my light sweater.

Jeans

I know I’m not the most fashionable gal on the block, but I really think a good pair of jeans always serve you well when you’re traveling.

The ones I use most are Levi’s Women’s Mile High Super Skinny Jeans. I seriously have two pairs of the same jeans and wear them all the time. These are great if you are heavier in the hips and thighs region like me because they don’t cut in at the jiggly parts making muffin rolls!

Leggings

If you need something to wear underneath your jeans for an extra bottom layer, I love to wear Zella live in high waist leggings. I bought mine from Nordstrom, and here is a similar kind on Amazon. The Zella leggings are high quality – mine have lasted for years and the high waist is great for curvy figures.

I didn’t use them much during the day, but when I went late night kayaking I definitely wore them as an extra layer to keep warm.

Comfortable Shoes

Since the chance of rain is high, it’s best if your shoes aren’t white. They will probably get a little dirty, especially if you will be going out to the countryside or visiting the mountains (which I definitely recommend!)

I used my old faithful Nike sneakers and they are comfortable enough to walk around on all day and also look pretty cool – since you’re dressing for rain the athleisure look is the way to go.

Whatever you choose, just make sure they are comfy for walking so you can explore all day.

Umbrella

When they say the only certainties in life are death and taxes, they should add rain in Ireland!

It’s pretty likely that you will be rained on at some point so pack a small umbrella in your day backpack when you are out and about. You can pick up a cheap one at a local department store or something, it doesn’t need to be fancy.

Ziplock or Plastic Bag

Given that you are likely to be out in the rain at some point, it’s a good idea to have either a large Ziplock bag or a plastic bag with you in your day backpack. This way you can protect your valuables like passport, camera, and wallet while you are walking around.

Don’t let the rain stop you from getting out and having fun – it’s only water and won’t kill you, just protect your valuables.

Camera & Electronics

I have all the details in my full guide on which camera is best for travel so I won’t repeat it all here (but definitely check that out for more information.)

But, the equipment I took for my trip to Ireland was the Sony Alpha a6000 and my GoPro with a GoPro Shorty selfie stick and tripod combo.
