2020 UPDATE: Jessica no longer sells sea glass jewelry through her shop, though she is available for orders on request. DM her on Instagram to make your order.

What is sea glass

First of all, for those that don’t know, sea glass is made from broken glass, like beer bottles. The glass is worn smooth by the waves of the ocean pounding it against the sand over time.

As a result, the glass pieces have a smooth, pebble-like feel to them.

Since broken glass doesn’t belong in the ocean in the first place, it is a wonderful Earth-friendly collector’s item.

Creating jewelry out of this glass really is turning trash into treasure.

I love to collect sea glass

You may already know this but one of my hobbies is collecting sea glass.

Sometimes it is so relaxing to wander along and collect the little treasures that lay on the beach. It becomes an addictive hobby where nature surprises you with different colors, shapes, and sizes each time you go exploring.

For me, I just enjoy collecting it and all the sea glass treasures I have found sit in glass jars on top of my fridge doing nothing. I haven’t quite figured out what to do with it all yet.

But let me introduce you to someone who has that figured out. She is a fellow beachcomber who creates wonderful pieces of jewelry out of it – Jessica Tejera.

Jessica is a woman of many skills. Not only is she a small business owner and creator of The Walking Mermaid Shop, but she is also a blogger, a photographer, and mother to a couple of little kiddos.

The Walking Mermaid Shop

After the birth of her first child, Jessica launched Anabella’s Jewelry, which later changed the name to the Walking Mermaid Shop. Her creativity began to spark.

Originally working with beads as well as making military themed jewelry, Jessica’s sights turned to beach-inspired works of art after her family was stationed in Hawaii. It seems like all the best ideas start in Hawaii right?

Now she creates jewelry from beads, shells, and sea glass and serves them up in a variety of ways. She even creates gold-dipped sea glass jewelry which is one of my favorites.

Unique sea glass jewelry in Hawaii

I love that there is an old school handmade quality to all of the works of art. It gives each piece an authentic, unique feel.

It’s a certain type of charm that we don’t see often in today’s age of mass-produced items.

There is also charm in placing your order with Jessica. She is more than helpful when it comes to preparing jewelry that suits you perfectly.

Sunrise shell necklaces

The sunrise shells are so iconically Hawaii and I really wanted to get one to commemorate my time living here. Luckily, Jessica makes sunrise shell necklaces.

She even makes gold-dipped ones that look so cool.

They’re a unique twist on the usual sunrise shell necklace. I love to wear my ‘sunny’ out to the beach and on adventures and instantly smile when I see it because it makes me think of Hawaii.

If you are overwhelmed with all the options on the site, I recommend getting a sunrise shell and a sea glass necklace with matching earrings. at the minimum. I’d also recommend getting one of those gold dipped for the unique style.

She also has a blog

Jessica also creates the Walking Mermaid Blog.

If you are interested in the outdoors, particularly camping style trips, I recommend checking out her site. She writes a lot of guides for traveling with family and outdoor trips.

Even though I have a much different travel style, I am always learning about handy new outdoor products from her blog and Instagram.

I hope this has helped introduce you to some of the beautiful sea glass jewelry in Hawaii that you can buy from The Walking Mermaid Shop.

It really is the perfect choice for a Hawaii inspired gift. With a little aloha in each piece, it is a great way to share the islands with your loved ones.
